Outdoor Running Tracks

In Outdoor Tracks, Consistency is Key

The Company

Runners on Track

Pro Track and Tennis, Inc. is a family-owned business based out of Omaha, Nebraska. Owner Lance Laurent has been active in the track and tennis court resurfacing industry for more than 20 years, and proudly began Pro Track and Tennis, Inc. in 2005. Lance has extensive knowledge of the sports surfacing industry and has personally installed more than 400 running tracks and just as many court surfaces.

Accella staff provides the type of accessibility and support to help make us more successful.

The Challenge

Dealing with the unpredictability of weather and the job site is one of our biggest challenges. In this business you can’t work when it’s raining, and heat and humidity can pose issues during the curing process. You don’t want your materials to set too quickly (which is contingent upon the climate conditions on-site), and if there’s any irregularity in the asphalt planarity, our contractors have to take extra care to ensure even installation of the system. Each job is a little different, so preparing our contractors to deliver a consistent end product every time, despite varying conditions, poses a real challenge.

The Solution

A key element in enabling our contractors to overcome this challenge is consistency. In other various products we’ve used, the same products can perform differently from one job to another. Our two lead track installers, who each have more than 20 years experience, are very happy with the Accella products. They are the ones handling the product day-in and day-out, and I’ve only heard positive feedback from them. They specifically like the structural spray because it consistently delivers excellent coverage. What’s important to me is that the products are competitively priced and that my contractors are familiar and successful with the product. Anything that causes problems in the field can slow you down and cost you money. If something doesn’t go as planned, the provided support is very important, and Accella staff provides the type of accessibility and support to help make us more successful.

The Challenge

Between limitations in the pool of available qualified installers and unexpected conditions on the job site, we are always trying to ensure process optimization by enabling our contractors to be successful through the use of familiar, high-quality products. Because job site conditions are usually working against us, and the flooring of indoor facilities is typically the last piece to be installed, it’s critical for the products to be consistent so our teams can install them efficiently. With a limited installation window, it’s also very important to ensure on-time site delivery of system components so that our contractors can install as soon as the facility is prepared and available.

The Solution

What really makes the difference in the end result for our customers is how the products work in the field when they are being put down. Product consistency saves us both time and money, and it’s clear Accella has worked extensively on creating user-friendly, competitively priced products that consistently deliver the correct physical properties. Accella products are uniquely formulated to be freeze resistant, which further ensures their consistency on-site year-round, no matter what traveling conditions may have been like. Their innovative water-based top coat has also saved us significant time with indoor installations, as this eco-friendly component does not require evacuation of the job site during the curing process.

Accessibility has placed another significant role in the successful installation of our systems. It’s our job to make sure that our customers and contractors are well versed in the systems we install, and our lead technical contractors are always able tap into the MarChem chemists directly, which makes a huge difference. The Accella staff’s response time is great, and their professionals understand how the products work in the lab as well as in the field, which really closes the gap for our installers.

Advanced Playground Surfaces

Combining Color Fastness and Durability to Meet Advanced Playground Surface Needs

Safety & Playground Surfaces

The Challenge

Accella Playground Surfaces

As outdoor safety surfaces and playgrounds continue to evolve in requirements, complexity and customization, end use customers need products that can meet both industry standards as well as their unique design specifications. These systems must be consistent upon installment, account accurately for climactic conditions, and be highly durable against damages from both UV exposure and usage. Additionally, while brightly colored EPDM rubber appears colorful and vibrant immediately after installation, it often shows a significant amount of yellowing over a short period of exposure to UV rays. This is caused by yellowing of the polyurethane adhesive used, and ultimately renders the surface aesthetically unappealing.

The Solution

Accella’s team of chemists has developed an alternative technology to meet today’s play and safety surface requirements, while also maintaining color fastness. While other color fast binders on the market provide an improvement over standard MDI binder, they generally cause installation crews to have a very difficult time working with the material. In response, Accella created an aliphatic isocyanate chemistry with the same installation characteristics as standard MDI binder, which greatly reduced installation time and expense over other color fast binders on the market. Additionally, the color fastness achieved continues to surpass any other product options available today.

The Challenge

Trojan Park St. Louis

Through the Parks Build Community initiative, the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) selected a location to restore a park in St. Louis, MO – the host city of its annual conference. In 2016, the NRPA decided to take on a new challenge for the first time – creating a park from scratch. The suburb of Wellston was chosen as a prime location to create Trojan Park, a state-of-the-art gathering place for youth, families, and adults. This large park, which is over 1-acre in size, required a safety surface that was not only durable enough to support large amounts of traffic, but was also aesthetically pleasing, eco-friendly, and of course, SAFE!

The Solution

Accella, a St. Louis-based company, saw this as the perfect opportunity to donate its Tru-Motion™ binder product. Tru-Motion, a moisture cure binder for use in construction of bonded rubber granule type surfaces, exhibits reactivity and cure rates similar to those of MDI based binders. Tru-Motion’s excellent color fastness and exterior durability allow the use of light colored EPDM granules without the objectionable yellowing encountered when using MDI and TDI binders. Tru-Motion products provide an eco-friendly, highly durable, visually appealing ground cover.

Accella chemists were on-site daily to oversee the installation of the base (aromatic) and top (aliphatic) coats. Working under a tight deadline, installers were able to cover this large area with the rubberized material. The entire project finished just in time for the park’s grand opening ceremonies…and for all of the eager kids waiting to try out the playground equipment!
